Daughters of Our Mothers (Broad)

Since the late ’90s, The Sapphire Sisters’ Daughters of Our Mothers Festival has provided an annual opportunity for female-identifying musicians to find strength in harmony and sisterhood in song. And after a smash Eastside run this spring, the Sisters are bringing their message of unity and resistance to the Eli and Edythe Broad Stage in Santa Monica on October 7.

In addition to the Sapphire Sisters — Jenna (Jen Burton) and Raina (Martha Marion) — and their band, the night will feature some fabulous artist guests, including angry rocker Kenzi LaChappelle (Lauren Flans), tender folk duo Heron & the Hen (Jamie Hultgren and Ryan Harrison), and cerebral singer-songwriter January Schonfeld (Leslie Korein). And the coming together of this sacred community of esoteric musicians may never have been so important as it is this year. Just read the news, you guys. Now is a time for us to be marching, joining hands, setting cop cars on fire, and above all lifting our voices to sing. Because whether you’re a son, a daughter, a sister, a grandmother, or a father – we’re all daughters of our mothers.

* The Edye is the more intimate of the two theaters at the Broad, and the only one named for a woman, philanthropist Edye Broad, whose spirit and artistic temperament we will be channeling as we burn the patriarchy to the ground. Frederick, Elizabeth, & Susan

Yes, we all had a lot of fun in the spring learning how subtly hostile the crew of the Apollo 11, the crew of the R.M.S. Titanic, Franklin & Eleanor Roosevelt, the Wright Brothers, and Jesus and His Disciples and their waitstaff were to one another. But there’s still so much historical dickery left to chronicle!

That’s why this Friday night we’re back with more Passive Aggressive History on Rachel Dratch’s Late Night Snack. This week’s installment features Frederick Douglass, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and Susan B. Anthony, three crusading friends caught up in a conflict not of their own making in which surely everyone will come out looking great. And there are three more PAH episodes headed your way in the weeks ahead!

Rachel Dratch’s Late Night Snack airs Friday nights on truTV. Check local listings! Because there’s no horror of our current national reality that spending a bit of time with the past can’t cure.

These segments include limo-based relationship advice from Alec Baldwin, a long-awaited star vehicle for Benjamin the Cat, and “Passive Aggressive History,” a painstakingly researched* series of docudramas chronicling every eye roll, backhanded compliment, and clench-toothed smile behind the iconic events that shaped our world — written by and starring the cast of Lost Moon Radio.
